About this Canoe Route

Nipekamew River (Lower)

Paddle through this less-travelled route that provides a great escape from the business of the city. There are many small sand beaches to stop at on the first half of this canoe route on the Nipekamew River.

The fast-moving current of Nipekamew River allows paddlers with moderate whitewater experiences to experience the lesser explored areas of Northern Saskatchewan. There are many sections of Class I/II whitewater areas along the top section of this route to keep you on your toes, followed by a long winding section through pine bench forest and a 2km continuous CII rapid near the end to tie it all together. The final section of river before the lake takes the paddler through an estuary full of migratory birds. This trip can be done in one very long day, or split into a two-day trip.

Once arriving at Nipekamew Bay, a 600m portage takes you to the Wapawekka road, you can choose to be picked up by boat shuttle or vehicle shuttle. Both of these canoe shuttle services are offered by Montreal River Outpost for your convenience. Esquif canoes are available for rent from us as well. A northern Saskatchewan trip for the thrill-seeker in you!
